Designing a nursery is one of the most joyful parts of preparing for a new baby. Whether this is your first little one or you’re adding another sweet soul to your growing family, the nursery is more than just a room — it’s a soft, cozy space where so many precious memories will unfold.

As a Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer, I’ve had the honor of stepping into many beautiful nurseries, each lovingly curated by moms like you. I’ve seen themes that made me gasp, smile, and even tear up — because every detail told a story. If you’re just beginning the process of dreaming up your baby’s nursery, here are a few ideas to help guide you — with a little creative inspiration sprinkled in from the photography side of things, too!

1. Start With What You Love

Your baby’s nursery doesn’t have to follow trends — it can start with something that simply makes your heart happy. Maybe it’s a color you’ve always loved, a childhood storybook, a nature theme, or even a favorite place. When you build around something meaningful, the room becomes even more special.

2. Choose a Theme That Grows With Your Baby.

A crescent moon and stars in a purple sky with silhouetted tree branches create a serene, dreamy night scene.

Try to think beyond the first few months. While teddy bears and rainbows are adorable, you might love a theme that feels a little more timeless — soft earth tones, stars and moons, or even a vintage travel theme. These grow beautifully with your child and make it easy to refresh the room as they get older.

3. A Peek Into My Son’s Nursery - built by a Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer

When I was designing my own baby boy’s nursery, I knew I wanted something sweet and nostalgic, but also something that could grow with him. I chose a light mint green and pastel blue color palette — soft, calming, and perfect for a baby, but also versatile enough to transition into different themes as he gets older.

The nursery theme was inspired by classic Winnie the Pooh, complete with all the beloved characters and woodland touches that make the Hundred Acre Wood feel so magical. We incorporated warm wooden tones, soft textures, and subtle forest elements to make it feel timeless, cozy, and personal.

What I love most is how easy it will be to adapt this space as he grows. Whether he falls in love with racecars and wants checkered flags or dreams of outdoor adventures and camping gear, the foundation is already there. We can update the decor to match his interests, while still keeping the same calming, classic feel.

One of the most special parts of his nursery, though, is what’s hanging on the walls — custom heirloom artwork from our maternity session. These portraits are full of love, light, and connection. Every morning when my son would wake up, I would carry him over to the wall and point to each of us in the photo — “Mama… Dada… Bear… Evvie.” (Bear is our dog, and Evvie is our cat!) Before long, he began saying all of our names out loud.

It was the sweetest reminder that even before he could fully understand, those images were helping him connect — to his family, to his world, and to the deep love that surrounds him.

That’s why I’m so passionate about helping other families do the same. When you fill your nursery with meaningful portraits, you’re giving your baby something powerful: a daily reminder that they are known, seen, and loved. I would be honored to help you create this kind of art for your little one’s space.

4. Build Around a Color Palette

Soft pink and orange clouds float in a serene blue sky, creating a peaceful, dreamy atmosphere.

Sometimes the easiest way to create a cohesive nursery is to start with a calming color palette — soft sage green, gentle beige, pale pink, or warm neutrals. You can add in textures (like knits or linen) and pops of pattern with rugs, wall decals, or curtains. The beauty of this approach? It makes your nursery feel soothing, serene, and photo-ready!

5. Personal Touches Make All the Difference

This is where your heart really comes into the room. Maybe you hang your baby’s name in wooden letters above the crib. Or display the ultrasound photo in a tiny frame on the shelf. You could include a handmade quilt from Grandma, your childhood stuffed animal, or even a framed handwritten note from you to your baby.

And here’s a sweet idea I love: Create space on the walls for family portraits.

6. The Power of Family Portraits in the Nursery

As a Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer, one of my favorite things is helping families create wall art that becomes part of their everyday life — especially in the nursery.

Imagine this: a gorgeous, soft-toned portrait of you holding your baby while still in your bump, framed next to a newborn photo taken just days after they arrived. Or a series of sweet, snuggly moments with you, your partner, and any siblings all loving on baby.

These portraits do more than decorate a wall. They speak to your baby. Even before your little one can talk, they are learning. Studies show that babies benefit from seeing familiar, loving faces — it helps them feel secure, recognized, and deeply loved.

When your baby gazes at those portraits, they’re not just seeing pictures — they’re connecting with their story. With their people. With their place in the world.

7. From Bump to Baby – Art That Tells Your Family’s Story

I offer both maternity and newborn photography sessions designed to flow beautifully into nursery design. Whether you’re going with dreamy florals, soft neutrals, or an earthy woodland vibe, we’ll plan your session with your space in mind.

Together, we’ll create heirloom-quality art pieces — framed prints, canvases, or custom albums — that feel like they were always meant to be part of your home. It’s about so much more than a photo session. It’s about creating your baby’s first gallery of love.

Let’s Make Something Beautiful Together

Whether you’re expecting or your little one is already here, I offer gentle, heartfelt maternity and newborn sessions that capture the love you already feel — and the story you’re just beginning.
